The History of Art Tiles in Wisconsin Schools
Between the 1910s through the 1960s, artistically-made Arts & Crafts tiles were installed in school buildings across Wisconsin. These fascinating tiles were created by professionals and were intended to add beauty and comfort to a school and make it more child-friendly. Pictorial tiles narrated all aspects of life, from the joy of playing sports, the splendor of flora and fauna, the history of the Nation, and the entertaining lyrics of nursery rhymes, and much more. Tyjeski shares these themes in tiles and how they served learning environments in some 70 school buildings in over 20 districts across Wisconsin, with generous photographs showing tiles at drinking fountains, fireplaces, fish ponds, and more.
